Binomial name: Cynara scolymus L. It is a perennial plant with a very developed subterranean rhizome, in which the reserves are accumulated. Origin: Southwest Asia, in Iran. Medicinal values: it is stimulating, appetizer, tonic-hepatic, tonic-cardiac, purgative of blood, antitoxic and diuretic. It helps to delete urea and uric acid. It prevents a lot of cholesterol disorders: hardening of the arteries, angina pectoris, brain hemorrhage, etc. Unfortunately, the part that usually is taken is the one with fewer benefits. Caloric value per 100 g: 50 kcal Varieties: we can put into groups by head colour, light green or violet. Curiosities: the name artichoke comes from an Arab term “al-kharshúf”; name related to the flower bracts. |
