Binomial name: Citrullus lanutus

It is a herbaceous, annual type of plant, that it has a creeping habit and a very developed root system.

Origin: it is native to tropical Africa and it has more than 5.000 years. Egyptians cultivated it on the banks of the Nile river, from where, over time, it was spread to the Mediterranean region. Later the European introduced it to the American continent.

Medicinal values: it has diuretic properties and it’s very advisable for kidney stones, high uric acid, hypertension and fluid diseases.

Caloric value per 100 g: 15 kcal

Varieties: Sugar Baye, Charleston Gray, Klondike, Crimson Sweet.

Curiosities: in water-scarce parts of Africa, watermelon replaces water in times of drought and it’s considered a water reserve more than a fruit.
