Binomial name: Phaseolus vulgaris

It is a herbaceus plant with an extremely varied morphology. It is characterised by its lengthened form, and it can measure from 10 to 20 cm.

Origin: the archaeologic evidences reveal that the origin of the green bean is America. It is easy to guess, so, that once it was discovered the New World, it was Spain the one who make public, from the 16th century, green beans across Europe.

Medicinal values: on this issue, the most salient effects that have green beans are the diuretic and depurative. They contain a big quantity of potassium and not much sodium, what favours the cleaning of the digestive system. They are recommended in case of hypertension or for kidney stones.

Varieties: Bobby, ferraura, tabella, perona.

Curiosities: it wasn’t until the 19th century when green beans were cultivated as vegetables. Before that only their seeds were used.
