Cucumber

Binomial name: Cucumis sativus

The cucumber belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. The plant has big leaves covered by bloom and yellow flared flowers.

Origin: cucumber is native to the tropical regions of South Asia, almost certainly, from North India, where it is cultivated for more than 3.000 years.

Medicinal values: it has diuretic properties, consequently it helps to eliminate excess fluids. The cucumbers, whenever they are fresh, are beneficial for hypertension and kidney stones.

Varieties: short, pickle, half long, long.

Curiosities: in Greece and Turkey they mix cucumber with yoghourt, what gives a special flavour to a great number of dishes. In some countries, cucumber is eaten baked as accompaniment of meats and even it is used to elaborate sweets.
